ISEE response to WHO Air Quality Guidelines 2021

2/10/2022

The World Health Organization (WHO) updated its 2005 Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQG) in September 2021. The new air quality guidelines (WHO AQG) are ambitious and reflect the large impact that air pollution has on global health. While the guidelines are not legally binding, we hope they will influence air quality policy across the globe for many years to come.

ISEE coordinated a joint effort with other societies to ensure these guidelines were published in 2021 through the ERS-ISEE joint letter to support the publishing of the 2021 WHO Air Quality Guidelines (link). Upon publication of the WHO AQG, the ISEE responded with a call for action to countries and international bodies to put in place regulations that reflect the 2021 WHO AQG, which is accessible at the ISEE website (link) and as a comment at the International Journal of Public Health (IJPP) (here). The statement was translated to over 21 languages by our enthusiastic SNRN members, and can be accessed here.
